Kolkata, India - January 20, 2025 A court in the Indian city of Kolkata on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment the main accused in the rape and murder of a doctor inside a hospital, a case that sparked protests and paralyzed medical services in the country as a demand for job security for health professionals. The convict is a civilian volunteer who frequented the facilities of the RG Kar hospital in Kolkata, capital of the state of West Bengal, who, according to the court, raped and murdered a young female doctor last August while she was on a break from a 36-hour shift.
