Flash floods kill at least two residents in Indonesia
Flash floods killed at least two residents amid heavy rain in Indonesia.
Local media reported that the storm destroyed bridges, houses, vehicles, and public facilities. More than 11,000 residents were displaced during the deluge in Lampung province on January 17.
Footage shows a bridge caving in from the strong current of muddy waters battering the structure. Another clip shows houses with only roofs visible due to severe flooding.
Cars can also be seen drifting away with some perched on the roofs.
Disaster Analyst Wahyu Hidayat said: 'Based on a temporary recapitulation of the flood disaster that occurred last Friday in Bandar Lampung City, it hit 16 sub-districts out of a total of 20 sub-districts and 79 sub-districts out of a total of 124 sub-districts.
'The number of people affected was 11,223 people, for the houses affected there were 14,160 units, and the number of heads of families affected was 518 heads of families, and two people died in the names of Suhendi and Bahtiar, residents of Bandar Lampung.'
Authorities are reportedly carrying out assessments to see the impact of the flood disaster that happened. The BPBD, TNI, Polri, Fire Department and sub-district officials are currently carrying out a clean-up operation due to the flood.
Due to severe continuous rainfall, families in some affected regions have reportedly evacuated.
On January 18, in Kuningan Regency, West Java, three houses caved in due to erosion caused by heavy rainfall.
Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia experienced the monsoon season last month, which brings soaring temperatures followed by powerful afternoon rainstorms, leading to widespread flash floods.
