This is the gruesome moment a surgeon performed a vasectomy on himself, which he said was a surprise gift for his wife.

Dr Chen Wei-nong said his wife does not want more children as they already have three kids together in Taipei, Taiwan.

The medic, eager to prove he is a devoted husband, did the male sterilisation surgery on himself.

Footage shows Dr Chen explaining on a whiteboard the steps he had to do to complete the procedure on January 9.

He wore a patient gown, face mask, and hairnet while performing the cut on himself on the hospital bed.

While patients usually lie on their backs while undergoing similar operations, the doctor's bed had the backrest raised so he could see his lower body clearly.

He was assisted by a nurse and, from time to time, paused from the pain.

Dr Chen said: 'It is really painful when you touch the vas deferens, and it feels strange to sew yourself up.'

The surgery is usually completed within 15 minutes, but the doctor's self-surgery was extended to an hour and was successful.

He said: 'It was a very special experience, but I will not do that again.'

A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure used as a permanent form of male contraception. It involves cutting or sealing the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, to prevent sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. As a result, fertilization is no longer possible.
