Protesters in the Congo attacked the historically significant Belgian Embassy amid anger at foreign interference in the country.

Footage shows the rioters outside the building in the capital Kinshasa on Tuesday, January 28.

Under King Leopold II, Belgium brutalised the country with unrestrained evil between 1885 and 1908, using extreme force and extreme cruelty to exploit the country's lucrative natural resources.

A statement from Belgium's Foreign Ministry said: 'We are in constant contact with our embassy in Kinshasa and the Congolese authorities. At no time has there been an immediate danger to embassy staff and visitors.'

Demonstrators also attacked the U.S. and French Embassies. They accuse France of supplying weapons to Rwanda, which they claim are being used to fuel conflict in the DRC.

At the U.S. embassy, rioters were seen climbing onto the roof as the building was attacked and looted.

Foreign affairs minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed the attack on the French embassy, stating that the fire has been brought under control.
