A crocodile sensed an easy takeaway meal - chasing a pet duck through a family's flooded yard.

CCTV footage shows the bird quickly swimming through the floodwaters before the determined estuarine croc appears.

With deadly accuracy, it targeted the prey and caught its dinner the village of Sangatta in East Kutai district, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the evening of January 27.

The duo disappears from view in the CCTV footage before the 13ft saltwater reptile returns, gliding triumphantly with the duck clenched in its jaws.

Worried residents promptly alerted officials to trace the animal roaming around their village, that was able to swim freely among the homes due to heave rain causing floods.

Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia have been experiencing the monsoon season, which typically brings soaring temperatures followed by intense afternoon rainstorms. These conditions have triggered widespread flash floods and landslides across the region.

The archipelago is home to 14 types of crocs - with a large population of extremely large and violent estuarine crocodiles that flourish in the region's climate.

The country has experienced significant deforestation and loss of natural habitat for crocodiles, especially in areas undergoing development or conversion to plantations. As their habitats shrink, crocodiles are displaced and may venture closer to human settlements in search of new territory.

Many villages and towns are also situated along coastlines and riverbanks, prime habitats for saltwater crocodiles. Rapid coastal development for tourism, housing, and industry has encroached on the crocodiles' natural environments.
