India: Wild elephants are getting aggressive due to chaos created by locals in West Bengal

Jalpaiguri, India - February 03, 2025 Jalpaiguri: Damdim, An elephant which strayed from the Apalchand forest to an area on Saturday was harassed badly by the locals. The elephant was dragged by its tail, stones were thrown at it and after being harassed by the people again, it climbed on a water tank built there. The elephant got so angry that it tried to break the water tank, injuring several people. The district administration has urged the tea gardens to remove barbed wire fencing, which is a threat to wildlife. The forest department has expressed serious concern and said that such harassment is continuing despite legal action. Officials said that despite Section 163 of the BNSS being in force, the locals did not refrain from intervening.
