A church roof collapsed, killing a female tourist and injuring five others in Brazil.

Giulia Panchoni Righetto, 26, from Sao Paulo, was visiting the 18th century-built Church of Sao Francisco during a trip when the ceiling toppled in Salvador on February 5.

She was buried under the debris of heavy wood, sustaining fatal injuries with five others who were not seriously hurt.

Footage shows the inside of the old building, also called the Golden Church for its baroque designs with gold details, with rubble scattered on the floor after all who were hurt were evacuated.

Bahia Civil Police said: 'The injured were treated by teams from the Mobile Emergency Care Service and the Fire Department and taken to a local health unit.'

Police cordoned off the area, which is a popular place for tourists to gather.

The Church of Sao Francisco in Salvador, Bahia is often referred to as the 'Golden Church' due to its lavish interior decorated with gold paint.
