Footage shows the carnage caused by flash floods in California, on Thursday, February 13.

Footage captured by Alexandra Datig near Big Rock on the east side of the Pacific Coast Highway's northbound lane shows the deluge hitting the road.

Officials reported that an atmospheric river has caused a deluge of heavy rain to batter the region, which is still reeling from fires that ravaged homes.

Mountain run-off surged into roads, causing traffic chaos as vehicles were stuck in the water.

The downpour rain broke a daily record at Fresno Yosemite International Airport, reaching 1.12 inches in one day. The previous record was 1.08 inches and was set in 2000.

The National Weather Service said rain continued on Friday but the worst conditions had subsided.
