Footage shows a vending machine that sells round-the-clock medicines and contraception.

The bizarre yet innovative machines have been placed in several areas across Bangkok, Thailand.

A local can be seen ordering through the screen and paying for a packet of condoms and lubricant using an online payment method on February 5.

The mechanism then lifts a white plastic basket to catch the products from the racks before dropping them into the opening.

Developers say the machine offers a variety of items, including bottled water, sanitary pads, vitamins, and pills.

They hope it will make them money while helping to stop the spread of STDs in the notoriously licentious city.

'For essential medicine, it's a great alternative to a pharmacy and these can be bought at any time of the day or night,' they said.

The first recorded vending machine was invented by Hero of Alexandria, a Greek mathematician and engineer, in the 1st century AD. His machine dispensed holy water in Egyptian temples when a coin was inserted.

The first commercial coin-operated vending machines, which dispensed postcards and envelopes, were introduced in London in the early 1880s by Percival Everitt.
