Dozens of boy racers showing off their wheels crash in motorway pile-up
Dozens of boy racers who were showing off their wheels crashed in a motorway pile-up.
The cocky motorists overtook cars as they raced each other across Route Seven in 'Sin City' Pattaya, in the early hours of February 16.
Footage shows the modified sedans speeding past other drivers, their engines revving loudly as they barreled into the distance.
However, one of them crashed into a road barrier, causing a multi-vehicle pile-up.
A rescue team and medics were dispatched to the scene at around 3 am. They said 12 cars were involved in the crash.
One driver was injured and had to be extracted from his vehicle with metal cutters before being sent to the hospital.
Rescue volunteer Ronnachai Jaipetch, 36, said: 'The drivers were travelling in their modified sedans from Pattaya to Bangkok, but I am not sure if they were under the influence of alcohol.'
Police said they have taken photos of the scene as evidence and were questioning the drag racers involved.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
