An American Airlines flight bound for Delhi was escorted by fighter jets due to a bomb threat on Sunday.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, departing from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York with 199 passengers and 15 crew members, requested a diversion to Rome around 2 pm.

Flight AA292, just two hours away from New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, made a sudden U-turn over Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

Footage shows Italian Air Force jets escorting the aircraft as it made an emergency landing at Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport at 5:30 pm.

Reports indicated that passengers were forced to stay on the plane for 15 hours due to the scare.

Local media reported the bomb threat was sent via email but was later deemed unfounded.

American Airlines said in a statement: 'American Airlines flight 292, with service from New York (JFK) to Delhi (DEL), diverted to Rome (FCO) due to a possible security concern.

'The flight landed safely at FCO, and law enforcement inspected and cleared the aircraft to re-depart. Safety and security are our top priorities and we apologise to our customers for the inconvenience.'
