St. Augustine, United States - February 24, 2025 On February 15, 2025, just before 3 p.m., a frantic distress call pierced through the salty air near the St. Augustine Inlet. SJSO Marine Unit Deputies sprang into action, racing toward a capsized boat where two adults and their dog were desperately holding on for survival. The water that day was a churning beast—strong winds and towering swells had transformed the sea into a merciless adversary. Deputies Michaux and Weintraub arrived at the scene with precision and grit. Amid the roiling waves, Deputy Michaux expertly maneuvered the SJSO vessel into position, while Deputy Weintraub wasted no time hauling the soaked and shivering adults, along with their loyal pup, to safety. The trio was whisked to the Vilano Fishing Pier, miraculously unscathed despite the ordeal. Assisting in the dramatic rescue were the St. Augustine Fire Department Marine Units and SJCFireRescue, whose swift response bolstered the effort. The dog, later revealed to be named Murphy, became the heart of a chaotic yet tender moment captured on video. Tangled in something stubborn—perhaps fishing line or debris—his rescuers grappled with scissors and determination. “I don’t think scissors are gonna cut this,” one voice muttered, while another chimed in, “We figured if we went there, it would have to come back.” With animal hospitals and fire stations out of reach, the group improvised, gently coaxing Murphy’s head down to free him. A nick to his ear drew a little blood, prompting a suggestion of hydrogen peroxide and a collective sigh of relief when he was finally untangled. “You’re welcome, Murphy,” someone said, as the soggy canine likely wagged his tail in gratitude.
