SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI NANNAN, NPC deputy, Head nurse at a local nursing home in Nantong
"When I first entered this industry, since I wasn't from Nantong, I couldn't speak the local dialect. Therefore I spent a few months learning it. Now I can speak idiomatic dialect which even locals can't tell the difference. Communicating with the elderly in such a fluent and easy way will make them feel more at ease."
Li was elected in 2018 as a deputy to the 13th National People's Congress (NPC), the country's national legislature. In 2023, she was re-elected as an NPC deputy.
During her NPC deputy terms, Li has made suggestions on cultivating industry talents. This year, she hopes to help improve long-term care insurance policies in order to better support seniors.
