Five men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was shot outside a primary school in broad daylight.

The victim, aged in his 20s, was blasted dead just yards from Eastfield Primary School in Wolverhampton just after 3.20pm on Tuesday (4/3).

The man, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene on Eastfield Grove despite the efforts of medics.

A second man has also been receiving hospital treatment for gunshot wounds following what police believe was a targeted attack.

West Midlands Police said five men, aged between 19 and 48, were arrested from a car in Birmingham last night (Wed) after they acted on information.

All suspects remain in custody being quizzed by detectives.

Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards, from the force's major crime unit, said: "A young man has tragically lost his life and we've teams working round-the-clock to establish exactly what happened and why."

"This is a significant development in our investigation and we'd continue to ask anyone with information to contact us."

Yesterday (Wed) residents told how they were living in fear of gangs roaming the streets and becoming 'too scared' to even leave their homes.

One resident of Eastfield Grove, who only wanted to be known as Mark, said: "It's ridiculous. This is happening way too often now. "

"We live in England, it shouldn't be like this."

We shouldn't be scared to leave our houses.

"I tell my kids daily to stay safe and come straight home after school, all because of these criminals shooting and stabbing people - you're terrified to let your kids out onto the street."

The fatal shooting marks the second firearm-related incident to take place in Wolverhampton in less than a month, with a man and woman being shot near Molineux on February 27.

Another resident of the road, who didn't want to be named out of fear, said: "This is unbelievable, it's not even that long after that other shooting. "

"The criminals have the run of the streets here."

"We just don't get a break, It's always knife crime or shootings. "

"How are you supposed to be happy with where you live if you are afraid of getting killed every time you leave the house."

A resident who only wanted to be called Tracey, said: "It's horrible. You just can't imagine what that family is going through. "

"I've got no idea what started it. But nothing is worth killing someone over. "

"I think it's getting out of hand. I think the police need to really look at what is happening around here. "

"I don't know what they're doing, but it isn't working."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic to the scene.

A service spokeswoman said: "On arrival, crews found a man receiving bystander CPR."

"Medics immediately administered advanced trauma care but sadly, despite everyone's best efforts, he could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene."

Any witnesses or anyone with mobile phone, doorbell or dashcam footage is asked to contact police on 101 or Live Chat, quoting 3288 of 04/03.
