A failed gas stunt is said to have caused an explosion that destroyed apartments in India.

Ranjana Jat and her relative, Anil Jat, 38, allegedly attempted to create a viral video by releasing gas into the air in their first-floor home at Legacy Plaza on Bhind Road in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of March 10.

The act triggered a powerful explosion, causing severe burn injuries to the pair and two of their in-laws, as well as damaging units in the seven-story building.

Footage shows the aftermath of the blast, with the suspects' one-bedroom apartment completely destroyed and neighbouring homes suffering structural damage.

Authorities said Anil was filming while Ranjana deliberately released gas from an LPG cylinder by tampering with its nozzle using a pin.

Anil then switched on a CFL light to improve visibility, inadvertently igniting the gas and causing a devastating explosion.

A police investigation revealed that the pair frequently engaged in dangerous pranks late at night in an attempt to gain social media attention and go viral.

Officers confiscated Anil's phone, which contained multiple similar videos.

Authorities have filed a complaint against Anil for negligence in handling flammable materials under Section 287 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
