This is the shocking moment a light aircraft burst into flames when it crash-landed in Orlando.

The Cirrus Design Corp SR20, registered as N485DA erupted into flames at the Orlando Sanford International Airport during a training flight on the afternoon of February 27 last year.

Footage shows the fiery wreckage skidding along the tarmac before ground crews on four-wheelers rushed in to extinguish the flames.

Authorities reported that the student pilot sustained serious injuries, while the flight instructor and another licensed pilot onboard escaped unharmed.

The aircraft was being used for instructional purposes under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 91.

Investigators said the student pilot was conducting a practice instrument approach. When he removed his view-limiting device, he realised the plane was flying too low. The flight instructor then took control and attempted to increase engine power.

However, the aircraft continued to descend, and despite manipulating the throttle, the instructor sensed the engine was no longer producing power. He checked the fuel selector but could not recall its exact position, while the mixture lever was set to full rich.

Moments later, the aircraft struck an unoccupied plane near the runway before coming to rest in a grassy area adjacent to the airport ramp.

A post-crash inspection found no mechanical failures in the engine. Officials discovered the right fuel tank contained just a quarter of a gallon of fuel and was intact, with the fuel selector set to draw from this nearly empty tank.

Data recovered from the avionics showed a drop in fuel flow and a loss of engine power about a minute before impact. Investigators believe the right fuel tank ran dry during the landing approach, leading to engine failure as the instructor tried to adjust the descent.
