A backhoe operator rescued a puppy from a burrow while filling a garbage site.

Santi Lamphueng, 45, spotted the paw prints while he was working at the rubbish dump in Chainat, Thailand.

He became concerned and stopped the machine before noticing the hapless male pooch stuck in the earth.

Santi adopted the puppy and named it 'Omyim San Aroi', which means 'very tasty lollipop'.

He said: 'The excavator bucket almost crushed the poor little dog. Fortunately, I noticed it was there and turned off the engine.

'I climbed down to pick up the puppy and realised it was a male. So I decided to adopt him.

'There are often stray dogs wandering through the landfill site to look for food. They will dig holes, so they are often in danger of being hurt.'
