RETURNEE QASEM AL-QASEM SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Arabic)HAMA, SYRIA - APR. 13, 2025: Displaced civilians living in camps across northern Syria have begun returning to their villages in coordination with local civil society organizations. After years of displacement due to conflict and bombardment, families from Atmeh camps have begun returning to their villages in northern Hama, many for the first time in more than a decade. Despite widespread destruction, many have set up tents on the ruins of their homes. “We spent 14 years living in tents under harsh conditions,” said Qasem al-Qasem, one of the returnees. “The joy of returning is beyond words.” “Steps must be taken to rebuild infrastructure and repair buildings that are still livable,” he said. “Ninety percent of our village has been destroyed.” Qasem al-Qasem emphasized that people need support to rebuild their lives.
