The festival called Bunpimay - (New Year Festival) or Hotnam Festival (Water Splashing) is one of the most important festivals of the year, preserved and organized by the people in April every year according to the traditional rituals, customs and practices, a very unique cultural feature of the Lao people.
During the traditional Bunpimay New Year of Laos, one of the indispensable activities is water splashing. This is considered the most typical ritual on this occasion with the meaning of purification, washing away all the bad luck, illness, and sins of the old year, welcoming a fresh new year. To show respect, young people splash water on the elderly to wish them a long life and prosperity.
The areas bordering Laos in Vietnam also celebrate Tet according to Lao traditions.
