International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Thursday called for a swift trade policy settlement among the major economies as she expressed concerns over increasing uncertainty that might add pressure on businesses, households and the global economic growth. Georgieva made the appeal at the 2025 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the IMF, which ran from Monday to Saturday in the U.S. capital Washington D.C. Thursday's session witnessed the release of IMF's Global Policy Agenda (GPA) and three policy priorities proposed by Georgieva, with the first priority and also the most urgent one being a trade settlement among major economies. "A trade policy settlement among the main players is essential, and we are urging them to do it swiftly, because uncertainty is very costly. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Without certainty, businesses do not invest, households prefer to save rather than to spend, and this further weakens prospects for already weakened growth," she said. Georgieva said the other two policy priorities are for countries around the world to maintain economic and financial stability, and actively promote growth-oriented reform to improve productivity. She added that in terms of fiscal policy, most countries need to rebuild buffer space and ensure sustainability, while in the respect of monetary policy, central banks need to strike a delicate balance between supporting growth and curbing inflation.
