Orangutans were given ice lollies as Thailand sizzles in intense summer heat.

The primates were given the frozen treats and refreshing mounds of flavoured ice shavings topped with fruit to help them cope with the scorching weather in Khon Kaen, on April 25.

Footage shows zookeepers placing the icy desserts in enclosures at the Khon Kaen Zoo, which saw temperatures soar to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius).

Zoo director Tipawadee Kittikoon said the special menu of 'bingsu' - Korean shaved ice - also helps simulate the natural behaviour of the animals.

She said: 'Each species received specially prepared food to help them cool off. Orangutans and chimpanzees were given frozen fruits like bananas, papayas and apples in ice blocks to encourage their natural foraging instincts, while hyenas enjoyed frozen pork to help lower their body temperature and encourage natural hunting behaviour.'

Water sprinklers and misting systems were also installed to make the heat more bearable.

The Thai Meteorological Department today warned of blistering heat and thunderstorms in northern Thailand.

The agency said a heat low-pressure system was prevailing in the upper region, while south and southwesterly winds were causing scattered storms in the area.
