Kangaroo on the loose causes highway chaos in Alabama
A runaway kangaroo named Sheila sparked highway mayhem in Alabama on April 29, 2025, after escaping from her enclosure at Choctafaula Ranch, owned by Patrick Starr.
Captured in footage by @wking__, the marsupial was seen on Interstate 85 in Macon County, where her unexpected appearance caused a two-vehicle crash and led to a temporary closure of the busy roadway.
Sheila was eventually recaptured using a tranquilizer dart and is now being treated at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. The incident has raised questions about the presence of exotic pets in the U.S., especially animals like kangaroos that are not native to the region.
Experts note that kangaroos, capable of reaching speeds up to 43 mph and exhibiting unpredictable behavior, can pose serious risks in populated areas—an issue highlighted in studies such as the 2018 Journal of Zoology report on marsupial movement.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but the bizarre escape has left locals both amused and concerned.
