Chaos as frenzied tourists scramble for rafts at overcrowded waterpark in China
On May 2, a chaotic scene broke out at the rafting attraction in the Huangteng Gorge Ecotourism Area in Qingyuan, Guangdong, as tourists scrambled to grab inflatable rafts.
Footage filmed by eyewitnesses shows the rafting launch site packed with people. Tourists in orange life jackets crowded into the water as over 30 inflatable rafts were dumped all at once from a transport vehicle by staff. The rafts landed in the shallow water, stacking on top of each other, and a frenzy ensued as tourists pushed and shoved to seize a boat, creating a disorderly and chaotic scene.
On May 3, staff at the Huangteng Gorge Ecotourism Area responded, saying: “There were a lot of tourists during the May Day holiday. Many waited in line but still couldn't get on the raft ride, which led to the chaotic scramble for rafts.” They explained that the surge in visitor numbers and poor crowd management caused the congestion and disorder.
“We’ve noticed the issue and have now implemented crowd control measures,” the staff added. The rafting activity is now capped at 12,000 visitors per day. “If we don’t control the crowd, no one will be able to enjoy the ride, and we can’t ensure safety.”
The Huangteng Gorge rafting course is 8 kilometres long, winding through waterfalls, deep pools, unique rock formations, and jungle scenery. The river drops a total of 398 metres, with over 130 drops of various sizes and more than 80 sharp S-shaped bends. Known for its steep gradients, fast currents, and thrilling experience, it remains a major draw for tourists.
