OAKLAND, Calif. — A young, endangered spider monkey named Violeta is receiving critical care at the Oakland Zoo after being rescued during a narcotics-related search warrant in Vallejo, California, last week.

The 18-month-old female monkey was surrendered by her owner during the operation led by the Solano County Sheriff’s Department. Oakland Zoo staff transported her to the zoo’s veterinary hospital, where she is being treated with UV light therapy, calcium supplements, and a balanced diet to support her recovery.

"Infant spider monkeys in the pet trade are often the result of their mothers and family members being shot down from the trees to capture the baby," said Colleen Kinzley, the zoo’s vice president of animal care, conservation and research. "It is crucial to raise awareness about the threats these animals face and to take action to end this deadly trade."

Spider monkeys are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with some species critically endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, and illegal wildlife trafficking—one of the largest illegal trades in the world.

Oakland Zoo officials report that Violeta is doing well and is being kept comfortable with blankets, enrichment, and close monitoring. Once fully recovered, the zoo will work with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Wildlife Confiscation Network to find her a permanent home in an accredited sanctuary or zoo.

The rescue highlights the zoo’s broader mission to fight wildlife trafficking and support victims of the exotic pet trade. Since 2021, the Oakland Zoo has responded to over 100 wildlife rescue requests and continues to advocate for national protections like the Captive Primate Safety Act.
