Macro the Rescued Raccoon Remembered for Resilience and Second Chances
TORONTO — The Toronto Zoo is mourning the loss of Macro, a rescued raccoon whose remarkable transformation captured hearts and became a symbol of second chances.
Macro arrived at the zoo in March 2023 after being confiscated from a private owner who had kept him illegally as a pet. Severely overweight at nearly 31 kilograms (68 pounds), he was immediately placed in the care of the Wildlife Health & Science Centre. With a specialized diet and months of close monitoring, Macro lost over half his body weight.
He was later introduced to Micro, another raccoon living in the zoo’s Canadian Domain. Though he didn’t know how to forage, climb, or behave like a raccoon, the Zoo’s Wildlife Care team—alongside Micro—guided him patiently, helping him rediscover his instincts.
“Macro became a beloved member of your Toronto Zoo community,” the zoo wrote on Facebook. “He was a symbol of resilience, of what compassionate care could do.”
On May 10, keepers noticed changes in Macro’s behavior. Veterinary staff later diagnosed a large kidney mass and additional complications. Due to the severity of his condition and poor prognosis, Macro was humanely euthanized.
His story remains a powerful reminder of the importance of proper wildlife care. It is illegal to keep native wildlife in Ontario without a provincial permit, a law designed to protect both animals and the public.
Macro’s journey—marked by recovery, connection, and care—leaves behind a legacy of compassion and advocacy for wild animals in need.
