WESTERNPORT, Md. — Residents and businesses in downtown Westernport were urged to evacuate immediately as rising floodwaters from the Savage River Dam threatened the area on Monday.

The Potomac Fire Company No. 2, in coordination with town officials, issued the emergency alert after floodgates were opened on the dam, significantly increasing water levels throughout the region.

A video shared by the fire company showed floodwaters surging through Church and Main Street, with additional high water reported from Main Street to Baughman Street. Several roads have been closed due to hazardous conditions.

“For your safety, please leave the area as soon as possible,” the department wrote on Facebook. “Turn around, don’t drown.”

The Bruce Outreach Center is open and serving as an evacuation site. Local street departments anticipate several days of cleanup once water levels recede. Residents are urged to remain alert, avoid driving through flooded roads, and follow all safety directives.
