Storyline: China takes another step forward in developing next-generation granary [Voice_over] Five 9,000-ton inflatable grain storage facilities were erected in central China's Hunan Province recently. Each silo is 24 meters in diameter and 33 meters high and can store enough food to supply 23 million people for one day. In addition to their waterproofing, insulation, and airtightness, engineers say the silos are expected to lower operational and maintenance costs by 30 percent compared to traditional silos. [Sound_bite] Wang Yue, Head, engineering design center, Chengdu Grain Storage Research Institute, Sinograin: "What's unique about these pneumatic silos is that they can withstand rain and cold air compared to traditional grain storage facilities. For the sake of storing grains, their airtightness is six times higher than national standards, and their thermal insulation performance is three times better than conventional squat silos." [Voice_over] The five 9,000-tonne silos are expected to be completed by the end of this year and enter into operation in February of 2026. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
