VARIOUS OF PARTY OFFICIALS AND SUPPORTERS CELEBRATING LISBON, PORTUGAL - MAY 19: Portuguese Prime Minister and Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Luis Montenegro delivered a victory speech at his party’s election night headquarters in Lisbon on Monday, May 19, following the announced success of the Democratic Alliance coalition in the parliamentary elections. The Democratic Alliance, a center-right coalition comprising Montenegro’s PSD and the right-wing CDS-PP, secured the most seats in the election but again fell short of an outright parliamentary majority, according to near-complete official results. Support for the far-right Chega party also saw a significant increase. The election followed the dissolution of parliament by the country’s president on March 13, prompting early legislative elections. With only four seats left to be assigned in Portugal’s 230-seat parliament, the Democratic Alliance (AD) held 32 seats. Tensions flared outside the PSD election night venue, as protesters attempted to storm the hotel. Several individuals were arrested by police during the confrontation.
