Muskegon, United States - May 22, 2025 Late Thursday night, Michigan State Police troopers jumped into a cold lake to rescue a man trapped on top of a submerged car in Muskegon County. Around 11 p.m., multiple agencies responded to a water emergency at the Wolf Lake Boat Launch in Egelston Township. The vehicle had left the roadway, crashed into the water, and began sinking. A man and a 2-year-old boy were being tended to when MSP troopers arrived. Body camera footage shows a trooper asking people on shore for directions into the water before swimming to the car. The man was standing on top of the submerged vehicle and confirmed no one else was inside. The man told troopers he couldn’t swim. Troopers swam him back to shore where he was able to stand up. Sadly, despite life-saving efforts, the 2-year-old boy later died at the hospital. The water temperature was likely in the mid-40s and the air temperature around 40 degrees, making the rescue even more dangerous. Deputies said the crash was tragic and involved a driver unfamiliar with the area.
