ELIZABETH, N.J. — Two New Jersey State Troopers from the Carteret Station rescued a distressed dog from the tidal waters of the Arthur Kill near the Elizabeth Marina on Sunday morning.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on July 6, Trooper I Michael Buchell and Trooper I Shane McClafferty responded to a report of a dog struggling in the current. While patrolling the area by boat, the troopers spotted the small dog and quickly took action. Tpr. McClafferty maneuvered the vessel as Tpr. Buchell deployed a life ring and rescue blanket, successfully bringing the dog aboard.

The dog, estimated to be about one year old, showed signs of fatigue and early-stage hypothermia. Troopers administered care and transported him to Carteret Station, where he recovered and was nicknamed Oscar the Grouch. Tpr. Buchell is temporarily caring for the dog as authorities search for his owner.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Friends of Elizabeth Animal Shelter at 908-820-4242 or 732-413-5006.
