On May 23 in downtown Dalian, Liaoning Province, a woman was attacked by a sika deer in a greenbelt area after the deer had recently given birth. Fortunately, she only suffered minor scrapes.

According to eyewitness and photographer Mr. Ma, the woman had approached the mother deer from a rear diagonal angle and was photographing the fawn when the mother deer turned, spotted her, and suddenly struck her repeatedly with its front hooves.

The woman used her hands to shield her head as onlookers shouted in an attempt to stop the attack. After around 20 seconds, the woman was able to escape. She tidied herself up afterward and left the scene on her own, apparently without serious injury.

Sika deer typically give birth once a year, usually in April or May. After birth, the mother deer will hide the fawn in dense shrubs and become highly protective. If the mother senses a threat to her young, she may take defensive action.

Local authorities have since posted notices warning the public not to approach deer during fawning season, as mother deer may become aggressive. Plans are underway to relocate the deer back into the mountains when conditions permit.
