Ancient Buddhist statues buried after Myanmar earthquake damage
Dozens of ancient Buddhist statues were buried after being damaged by an earthquake in Myanmar.
Residents experienced a powerful 7.7 magnitude tremor that shattered religious sculptures at the Golden Jewel Temple in Sagaing on March 28.
Footage shows men working together to carefully reposition a broken sculpture into a pit.
Devotees can be seen removing some of the rocks from the hole to properly secure the statue.
Local media reported widespread destruction, especially near the epicenter close to Mandalay and Sagaing.
In Sagaing city, approximately 1,000 fatalities were reported, with 90 per cent of structures destroyed.
The Ava Bridge collapsed, severing a crucial link between Sagaing and Mandalay.
Several mosques and monastic schools were also damaged, and over 900 monks were trapped across four schools.
The death toll has surpassed 3,700, with over 5,100 people reported injured.
The earthquake caused widespread devastation across six regions, displacing more than 3.5 million people nationwide.
International aid was recently mobilised, with countries like India launching 'Operation Brahma' to provide medical assistance and relief supplies.
However, access to affected areas remains challenging due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing conflict between the junta and rebel groups.
As recovery efforts continue, the people of Sagaing and surrounding regions face significant challenges in rebuilding their lives and communities.
