..GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JUNE 13, 2025: Palestinian journalists continue to risk their lives for the third consecutive day to deliver the truth to the world, as Israel has blacked out the entire Gaza Strip. Following Israel’s attacks on infrastructure, internet and communication services in the Palestinian enclave have been completely cut off. In response to the blackout, many journalists are heading to Gaza’s port—which is within firing range of Israeli warships—or climbing to elevated but exposed areas that are frequently targeted by the Israeli military, in hopes of getting a weak signal through Israeli network-linked SIM cards to transmit photos and news. However, the fact that the SIM cards are connected to Israeli networks, and that some journalists using them have previously been targeted, increases the risk of being directly attacked. The Palestinian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority announced yesterday that fixed internet and communication services had been completely severed due to Israeli attacks. The outage has entered its second day in Gaza and the northern region, and has now begun in the southern and central parts as well. The statement described this digital blackout as the result of Israel’s systematic targeting of communication infrastructure, emphasizing that even the lines that had previously been cut and later repaired through alternative methods have also come under attack. It also noted that the complete shutdown coincided with Israel's launch of its operation “Rising Lion” against Iran, involving more than 200 fighter jets. Al Jazeera correspondent Muaz al-Omor said that media crews have been trying to find alternative solutions since the internet was cut off. He explained that under such harsh conditions, the port area has become the only point of access. Teams send content through SIM cards that can connect to Israeli networks, and then quickly leave the area. Al-Omor said the Israeli navy is stationed very close to shore and could open fire at any moment, and Israeli drones fly low over the area constantly. He emphasized that all media work is being carried out under the constant threat of being targeted. "Is this a deliberate attempt by the Israeli occupation to impose a blackout on what is happening in Gaza, and to create a media blackout over the entire Gaza Strip?" said the Palestinian journalist. "Since the beginning of the war, the Israeli occupation has targeted a number of journalists and others who were using electronic SIM cards." The Israeli army resumed its attacks on the Gaza Strip on March 18, abandoning a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January. UN agencies have stressed they must be allowed to deliver aid in the Gaza Strip as famine looms and a telecommunications blackout threatens lifesaving operations. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
