Resident playing in the rain stunned by lightning strike a few metres away
A resident playing in the rain was stunned when a bolt of lightning struck just a few metres away.
Footage shows Kevin Dale Catapang running and riding his bicycle during a downpour in Batangas, the Philippines.
He was enjoying the refreshing rain when a sudden flash of lightning lit up the sky and startled him, leaving him in shock.
Kevin darted towards a patch of banana trees to hide on June 6.
He said: ‘I was just having fun, but I seriously could have died that day.'
The thunderbolt hit a nearby tree but did not cause damage to the nearby house.
Kevin then rushed back into their home, but he was unhurt.
Each year, about 6,000 to 24,000 people worldwide die from lightning strikes, according to official estimates.
Around 80 people a year died from lightning strikes in the Philippines from 2006 to 2021.
The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
