Caribbean Netherlands: Dutch police confront protesters after defacement of foreign ministry entrance in rally against seizure of Gaza-bound aid ship
THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS - JUNE 9, 2025: A pro-Palestinian demonstration took place on Monday, June 9, outside the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, following Israel’s interception of a humanitarian aid ship attempting to break the blockade on Gaza. The demonstration was organized in response to the seizure of the Gaza-bound aid ship Madleen by Israel. Protesters demanded the immediate release of the ship, which was carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza, as well as the release of activists on board — including a Dutch national. Protesters marked the entrance of the ministry with pro-Palestinian symbols and slogans that read, "Not a war, it's a genocide," and "The Netherlands profits from genocide." Many waved Palestinian flags and held placards with messages such as “If governments fail, we sail,” “Stop Dutch complicity,” “Free Palestine,” and “Stop the genocide.” Demonstrators also called on the Dutch government to ensure protection for humanitarian missions and to demand unimpeded access for aid deliveries to the besieged population in Gaza The protest ended in confrontations as Dutch police intervened with force, leading to clashes with demonstrators. Carrying an amount of aid, including food and baby formula, the British-flagged ship was boarded by Israeli forces during the night before it could reach the Gaza shore and all activists on board were detained. The vessel aimed to break a crippling blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza, where nearly 55,000 people have been killed in ongoing genocide since October 2023.
