A suspected motorcycle bomb sparked panic when it was discovered in the car park of an airport in Thailand.

The two-wheeler was reportedly abandoned outside the domestic terminal of Phuket International Airport on Wednesday evening.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal and K-9 teams were called to the scene after the suspicious bike - one of three under police surveillance for bombs - was reported at the airport.

Officers briefly investigated the vehicle and discovered it was rigged with an improvised explosive device hidden under the seat. They immediately cordoned off a 200-metre radius according to safety protocols.

Dramatic footage shows the bomb squad taking cover behind road barriers as they carried out a controlled detonation. The blast rang throughout the car park as firefighters extinguished the burning bike.

Airport authorities said the bomb scare did not disrupt flights or operations.

Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum, commander of the Phuket provincial police, said they were investigating if the attempted bombing was linked to a recent arrest in neighbouring Phang Nga, where two suspects were caught with homemade bombs as they were heading to Phuket.

He said: 'We urge the public not to panic. Police, in coordination with provincial authorities and the military, have taken comprehensive security measures.'

In a statement, the Phuket International Airport said: 'While operations continue as normal, security protocols have been significantly strengthened.

'Authorities have stepped up inspections of all vehicles and individuals entering and exiting the premises. Additionally, mixed patrol units are now conducting more frequent rounds to monitor and maintain order within the airport grounds.

'These enhanced measures aim to ensure the highest levels of safety and reassurance for all passengers and airport users.'
