A 37-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect following the death of a baby boy in Birmingham.

Emergency services were called to Culford Drive in the Barley Green area of the city to reports of a child having a medical emergency at 4.30pm yesterday (Wed).

West Midlands Police said the tragic tot was taken to hospital, where he died despite the efforts of medics.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect and remains in custody today (Thurs) being quizzed by police.

A force spokesperson said "We were called to reports of a baby having a medical emergency at an address in Culford Drive, at around 4.30pm yesterday."

"The baby was taken to hospital, where he sadly died."

"A 37-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect, and she remains in custody for questioning."

"We understand the concerns of the community of this incident, but we would ask the public not to speculate on the circumstances."

Neighbours told the BBC the baby's death was "heartbreaking" and the cul-de-sac was a "close and friendly" community."
