Dashcam footage has captured the moments 21 drivers were caught recklessly driving through red traffic lights in a Midlands city.

The videos were all captured by one drivers dashboard camera in the city of Birmingham, England over a six month period from 2024 to 2025 (most recently 26 June 2025).

The driver who did not want to be named said: "I drive quite a lot for work and have seen an uptick in incidents where so many drivers carry on like sheep behind others despite the light turning red.

"I have seen a few near misses, even when moving on myself beyond the green light, people are still driving through the red light. It is like the laws simply don't apply."

In the first clip, vehicles are stationary at a traffic light on Pershore Road as joggers cross the road before a white car overtakes and drives through the red ATS light with another white car which first waited at the crossing, then also following through the red light.

The clip at the end of the sequence captures a white BMW driver initially waiting at the red light on Bristol Road in the Selly Oak area of the city, before deciding to move off through the red light, turning left, which causes a motorcycle rider to start to move before the dashcam driver beeps his horn and the rider corrects himself.

The dashcam driver continued: "Birmingham has got rid of most of their speed cameras for over a decade and also their red light cameras have been switched off.

"We have a few dotted around, but they aren't turned on and drivers know it, The problem keeps on getting worse."

A Sky News investigation, reported on Friday 27 June 2025, "found that fewer than 1.5% of traffic lights in the UK have red light cameras monitoring them.

"Of the 157 local authorities who responded to our [Sky News'] request for data or who directed Sky News to their local police forces, many reported no working red light cameras at all.

"There are only five in all of Scotland. In West Northamptonshire, the cameras were switched off in 2011 and, in London and Greater Manchester, fewer than 4% of traffic lights have a red light camera."

The article spoke to families of pedestrians who had been killed by red light runners.
