We started assessing our condition to find out who was fine-who was affected. His leg was torn off. It completely severed the foot from above, a full amputation. There were also injuries to the back, bladder, anus, and intestines. Many were lightly injured, but until now, none were seriously hurt. In the end, it was a terrifying disaster." 8. WHITE FLASH 9. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOTHER OF INJURED INFANT, LAYLA SAYING: "Of course, we went to the hospital right after the ambulance. I didn't get the injection; someone helped us, folks from the neighborhood, may Allah bless them. They took us to the hospital right from the ambulance. We were behind, and when we arrived at the hospital, his leg was amputated. I wasn't even aware of the price of the treatment. So, what can I say, Lord? Thank Allah he's alive. He's just a child, but if he stays in Gaza, we can't save his life.” 10. WHITE FLASH 11. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOTHER OF INJURED INFANT, LAYLA SAYING: "Of course, the first shock was when we found out he was injured. He had three operations — one for the bone and two surgeries. Two pediatric surgeries. And after he came out of intensive care, for five days straight he kept going into the operating room — one day there’s an emergency, then another surgery, and today another surgery. He still has three operations left. Every day there’s something. His veins were damaged — from the back — and it’s a lot. We beg the whole world to hear his voice, to care. To hear his voice — the voice of this innocent child who had nothing to do with anything. He was injured and hugged me, saying, ‘My feelings are shattered, my life is gone.’ He hasn’t lived anything in this life. He just wants to laugh, to feel what laughter is. He needs to travel abroad for treatment because his condition is very serious.” 12. WHITE FLASH 13. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOTHER OF INJURED INFANT, LAYLA SAYING: "I appeal to the World Health Organization to intervene and evacuate him as quickly as possible- — it's an emergency — because his condition is very difficult. Save the life of an innocent child.” 14. BABY HANI LYING ON BED 15. VARIOUS OF MOTHER LAYLA HOLDING HANI’S HAND AS HE LIES ON BED GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JUNE 27: Four-month-old Hani Ziyara, a Palestinian infant, is fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, his tiny body swathed in white bandages. His plight underscores the immense tragedy facing civilians, particularly children, in the Gaza Strip, where a recent Israeli attack destroyed his home and left him severely injured. A few days ago, an Israeli army attack on a house in the Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza City, irrevocably altered Hani's life. Before he could even take his first steps, he lost one of his feet and sustained severe injuries across his body. The incident has silenced the laughter of the four-month-old, replacing it with a desperate struggle for survival. His mother, Layla, tearfully recounted the harrowing experience to an Anadolu reporter, describing the moment of the attack: "The explosion was extremely violent. The ceiling collapsed on us. Dust, darkness, and screams all mixed together in an instant." In the chaotic aftermath, Layla desperately searched for her child amidst the rubble. She found Hani covered in blood, his foot gone and his face wounded. Later, they learned that his internal organs were also severely damaged. According to doctors, Hani's injuries extend far beyond the loss of his foot; the attack caused nearly irreversible damage to his internal organs and other parts of his body. Numerous shrapnel fragments remain lodged within him and have yet to be removed. Hani has undergone five surgeries in days, with three more needed. "Every day, there’s another emergency," Layla said, her voice breaking. "He hasn’t lived anything in this life. He just wants to laugh." With Gaza’s healthcare system in ruins, Layla begged the World Health Organization (WHO) and the international community to evacuate her son. “It's an emergency — because his condition is very difficult. Save the life of an innocent child," she pleaded. The WHO reports 12,000–14,000 critically injured Gazans, including 4,500 children, urgently need evacuation. But since May 2024, the Rafah border has been sealed, permitting only rare WHO-approved cases. Gaza’s Health Ministry accuses Israel of systematically targeting medical infrastructure since October 7, 2023, leaving 56,331 dead and 132,632 wounded in its ongoing offensive. As Hani fights for survival, his mother’s cry echoes across a world yet to act: "If he stays in Gaza, we can’t save him." Reporting by Mehmet Nuri Ucar, Mohamed Majed Writing by Sibel Uygun
