A heroic operation carried out by Iceland Search and Rescue teams saw around 50 beached pilot whales rescued in Ólafsfjörður.

Footage from June 21 shows dozens of the self-beached whales struggling in shallow waters near the shore before authorities managed to rescue them.

The filmer told Newsflare: "Icelanders should not be confused with the Faroese who hunt this type of whale but it's not done in Iceland, so if possible, beached whales are rescued, but this beaching event was huge.

"Occurred luckily during daytime and it was a huge achievement to get them out but what we see are local SAR teams and even local firemen using muscles and ropes to drag them out.

"The video timeline is correct, and the first clips show the beaching still going on, the first school had just beached, and the others were following. It's hard to believe that all of them were rescued, but still a fact."
