Dozens of passengers were injured when a bus carrying tourists overturned in Thailand on Tuesday night.

The coach was traveling from Bangkok to the island of Phuket in the south of the country when it skidded on the slippery road in Phetchaburi province.

Police found the vehicle overturned on the highway. Desperate holidaymakers were inside, smashing the glass windows to escape.

Police Major Sunanta Rodpetch said 28 tourists were onboard along with a driver and conductor. Some of them received first aid at the roadside while 12 were taken to the Phra Chomklao Phetchaburi Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phetchaburi.

One of the victims was in a critical condition.

The police chief said: ‘At the Hua Saphan curve, where the incident occurred, accidents occur frequently during rain, causing many deaths and injuries.'

Deputy Phetchaburi Governor Phakaphat Songwattanayut said the injured tourists included a family of four from France, one Indonesian, and one Swedish national.

The bus driver, Thalerngsak Tapina, said that light rain had been falling at the time.

He said: 'The vehicle lost traction and spun out of control. Then it flipped over into a roadside ditch.'
