Firefighting helicopters dumped water on the Marseille wildfire in France to contain the spread of flames.

Dramatic footage shows the aircraft mid-air releasing fire suppressant over the blaze on July 9.

Authorities said the fie began on Tuesday in Les Pennes-Mirabeau and rapidly spread towards Marseille, leading to the suspension of airport operations.

More than 1,000 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fire, with officials reporting that around 720 hectares had already been scorched.

Hundreds of homes were evacuated, and no fatalities have been reported.
