Building collapse at religious gathering leaving four dead and dozens injured in Indonesia
A building collapsed during a religious gathering in Indonesia, leaving at least four people dead and dozens injured.
More than a hundred worshippers had gathered in a two-storey prayer hall for a Koran recital marking the Prophet Mohammed's birthday when the structure suddenly gave way on Sunday morning, September 7.
The building belongs to the Ashabiyah Islamic Study Group in Sukamakmur Village, Ciomas District, Bogor Regency, West Java.
Dramatic footage shows panicked attendees screaming in fear as they attempt to rescue victims from beneath the debris.
Bogor Regent Rudy Susmanto confirmed that 84 people were taken to various hospitals across the district for treatment.
He said around 150 people, most of them women, had attended the celebration, with some standing on the terrace when the collapse occurred.
Susmanto added: 'The building's terrace stood on the edge of a cliff, and due to being over capacity, it was ultimately unable to support the load. This resulted in a disaster, with more than 80 victims.'
'We offer our deepest condolences and hope the victims' families find strength.'
An investigation is ongoing, but locals noted that weather conditions were clear at the time and there were no signs of a landslide.
