Bus carrying karate athletes crashes killing two in Indonesia
A bus carrying karate athletes crashed in Indonesia on Sunday night, killing at least two and injuring dozens more.
The ALS Tourism coach was transporting a group of players from Medan, North Sumatra, when it reportedly struck a road divider in Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra, at around 11:30 pm local time on September 7.
Padang Pariaman Police Traffic Unit Head, Iptu Rudi Chandra, said: 'The bus, which was en route to Padang City to participate in a national karate championship, is believed to have overturned after the driver lost control.'
Footage shows emergency responders conducting rescue operations while the damaged coach remains flipped on its left side near the Padang-Sicincin Toll Road exit.
Two male athletes, aged 17 and 11, died in the crash, while 29 others sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
Local media reported the driver is suspected of fleeing the scene.
Chandra added: 'We cannot yet determine the exact cause of the accident - whether it was due to negligence, the condition of the vehicle, or the state of the road.'
