Guatemala earthquake rocks hotel as guests are evacuated
An earthquake rocked a hotel in Guatemala, prompting the evacuation of guests.
Footage shows distressed visitors gathered outside the Tikal Futura Hotel and Convention Centre in the capital on July 8.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the first tremor struck at 3:11 pm with a magnitude of 4.8, centred southwest of the capital.
Shortly after, a stronger 5.7 magnitude quake was recorded approximately 3 kilometres northwest of San Vicente Pacaya, a municipality in the department of Escuintla.
Two men were killed when falling rocks struck their pickup truck on a rural road in Escuintla.
President Bernardo Arevalo confirmed that five people were caught in landslides triggered by the quake - two were rescued and hospitalised, while three others received medical attention.
Guatemala lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common.
