A landslide has killed at least 21 people and left dozens more trapped in the remote Papua region of Indonesia.

Earth and rocks crashed down a mountainside, burying the village of Kukas in the Minamb Valley in Enga province in the early hours of Friday morning.

Lasro Mola Panga, chairman of the Minamb Valley Peace and Security Foundation, said villagers were today searching for survivors. At least 21 bodies had been recovered by nightfall.

He said: 'Currently, we do not know the total number of victims who died in this landslide, and the number may still increase after we count the number of victims.'
