This is the terrifying moment a strong earthquake shook an office in Guatemala as tremors rocked the country.

Footage shows computer monitors shaking violently in the capital at around 3:41 pm local time on July 8.

The United States Geological Survey reported the temblor began at 3:11 pm with a magnitude of 4.8 southwest of Guatemala City. Around 30 minutes later, a second, stronger tremor measuring 5.7 struck the same area.

The epicentres were near the city of Amatitlan, just 4.7 kilometres from Guatemala City, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

President Bernardo Arevalo confirmed that five people were caught in landslides triggered by the quake - two were rescued and hospitalised, while three others received medical attention.

Guatemala lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common.
