Thai rescuers ferried locals across a flood as sandbag barriers collapsed along a swollen river in central Thailand.

Footage shows rescue teams using a raft to drag the locals through a flooded street in Sukhothai, on July 28.

The overflowing Yom River had burst through sandbag barriers that were shoring up the river embankment, sending floods surging into nearby communities.

Authorities said flooding in the province remained 'critical' as the river level continued to rise.

Sukhothai governor Nopparit Sirikosol said he has ordered relevant agencies to carry out relief operations and strengthen flood defences.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
