A man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail after a fatal fire in Newquay. The body of a man in his 30s was found in a building on Narrowcliff after a blaze broke out on Tuesday afternoon, July 22.
The blaze broke out in the vicinity of the derelict Narrowcliff Hotel, The body of a deceased man was found inside a residential property between the Narrowcliff and Bristol Hotels.
Devon and Cornwall Police said a 33-year-old man from Bolton was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has now been released on police bail while further enquiries are carried out
The cause of the man's death is being treated as unexplained, while the cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious. Investigations continue to determine the cause. A police cordon remains in place at the scene.
Detective Superintendent Jon Bancroft, Force Senior Investigation Officer, said: “Officers are continuing to carry out several enquiries around this investigation.
“While a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently released on bail, we are keeping an open mind about the circumstances surrounding the death, which we are currently treating as unexplained.
Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for information from anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have relevant information or dashcam After the fire on Tuesday the 21st July at The landmark Narrowcliff Hotel and adjoining Hotel Bristol, both semi derelict and earmarked for demolition, before development of the site to provide high-rise apartments, the circumstances of the fire and the death triggered a forensic investigation at the site. Specialist teams are seen with a sniffer dog at the rear of the site. Local councillor Joanne Kenny has reiterated calls for Council action on derelict buildings in the town, many of which are earmarked for development, to reduce the dangers inherent in decaying and insecure buildings to the public.
