URIUMGHAT,ASSAM,INDIA-JULY 29: A large-scale eviction operation was launched within the Rengma Reserve Forest in Uriamghat, located in Assam’s Golaghat district near the Nagaland border.
The drive, which aims to clear more than 11,000 bighas of forest land, involved the demolition of numerous houses, shops, and business establishments using over 150 excavators and bulldozers. The operation was carried out under tight security, with a heavy presence of police and forest officials.
Authorities reported that over 2,000 families had been living on the land illegally for years. According to the Golaghat district administration, many of the evicted families primarily Muslims have homes in other districts such as Barpeta, Nagaon, Dhubri, and Morigaon, and were allegedly encroaching on forest land.
The eviction drive began early in the morning at Bidyapur market, causing panic among the settlers. Officials stated that 12 villages, established by what they referred to as "suspected citizens," are being targeted in the operation.
